The website Taste Atlas recently updated its list of the world’s best cheese dishes, awarding the top spot to a Greek favorite: Saganaki. According to Taste Atlas users, saganaki is the best cheese dish globally, scoring an impressive 4.6 out of 5.
Saganaki is a very popular Greek appetizer, typically made by frying cheese in a small, two-handled pan (called a “saganaki”) until it forms a golden, crispy crust. It can be served on its own or with other ingredients like shrimp, mussels, or vegetables. Traditionally, cheeses used in saganaki include graviera, kefalograviera, kasseri, kefalotyri, or sheep’s milk feta—types that melt well without losing their shape. Historically, “saganaki” referred to a method Greek farmers used to flavor local cheeses by frying varieties like feta, kefalotyri, or manouri.
While different regions have their own versions (Arachova uses formaela, Cyprus uses halloumi), Greek saganaki most commonly uses firm, melty cheeses. Taste Atlas is a popular online food guide known for showcasing dishes, drinks, and flavors worldwide, based on votes and preferences from its users.
